All I'm going to say about this is that Coulter deserves some credit for saying the things that others in her group feel, but are afraid to say. I would much rather have people speaking their minds than using double-speak to obscure their thoughts and intentions.
Like when Bush talks about saving social security. He is masking the politically deadly fact that he would like to destroy social security. (Or Clear Skies, or No Child Left Behind, etc...) Or when a white seperatist tries to tell you that he doesn't think blacks are inferior, he just doesn't want to live next to them. It's clear he doesn't want to live next to them because he thinks he's better than them.
There was quite a kerfuffle recently when Tim Hardaway said that he didn't like the gays. He said he was homophobic. Most people trashed him. The NBA disowned him. My first thought was, what refreshing honesty! He's admitting that he's homophobic! He's afraid of gay people. To me, in this day and age, that's a breath of fresh air.
Obviously, I think it's ludicrous to judge anyone based on what floats their boat sexually (do I need to add - or skin color, gender, age, nationality...) but I think it's all too rare that someone comes out and says what they actually think about such things.
Racism exists. Prejudices exist. They're stupid, they're wrong, they're beneath us, but they are there.
Would you rather have people (especially influential members of political parties) hiding it, or would you rather have them speaking openly about it? Which option is the more direct road to change?
All that said, it is sad that the media chooses to give her even more publicity by having her on all the talk shows to discuss her vile remarks. But I get that. It's what people are talking about. They want to air programs about what people are talking about. But the saddest thing about this is that CPAC can't bring themselves to directly condemn her remarks. If those words had come from a child, they would have been merely stupid. Coming from one of the most powerful voices in the republican party, they were hateful. The republicans are one of only two viable political parties in our country. Are they cowed by her, or by the people who support her within their party? It's not as if this is a first time offense. They honestly can't hold a convention without inviting this person? That is sad.
