Rock Critics Are Idiots

B000000w5l01lzzzzzzz

I heard this in one of my favorite Scharpling & Wurster bits, namely "Kid eBay."

(Kid eBay is a bit where Wurster plays a cocky guy who uses nefarious means to profit on eBay. The bit is great because of the bizarre twist it takes when Kid eBay falls down some stairs, and then while fatally injured and in horrible pain, he proceeds to have an incredibly nuanced discussion with Scharpling about music. I loved this the minute I heard it, but I love it even more after hearing their interview on A Special Thing and learning that everything after Kid eBay's fall was pretty much improvised. I hate improv comedy as a rule. But this was great.)

Anyway, one of the things they mention in their discussion of rockdom is a Harp article about Exile on Main Street, and how it is a "Desert Island Dud."

So I looked it up. Exile is about my favorite album of all time, so I figured if some writer has a beef with it I'd like to hear it.  I read it last night, and I have to say, it gave me pause. Apparantly, the Rolling Stones are sort of dicks! And they did a lot of DRUGS! And sometimes, Keith Richards would call the engineer guy and make him come to the studio in the middle of the night because he had an idea about something, but maybe then he would fall asleep again, probably because he was on DRUGS!

What a fucking tool this Harp guy is. His other complaint is that  NOT ALL OF THE STONES PLAYED ON EVERY SINGLE TRACK!

Well, I for one would like my money back.

I have always said that the Rolling Stones are not at their best as a live act. I don't care how much some idiots pay to see them. Jagger's vocals when he's on the road are atrocious. And their best songs all revel in the little things that are added in studio. They are a studio band, and whatever it takes to get them through each track is fine with me. How much do I care that Bill Wyman didn't play bass on that last track? Uh, not at all. If the song has Jagger and/or Richards in it, I'm OK with that.

Anyway, this guy made me a little mad. And I listened to Exile again just to make sure it was as great as I remembered it. (It was.)

EVERYTHING about this record is great. I don't care if Sweet Black Angel offends the Harp guy. He's an idiot. This is a fantastic record. It is my favorite record. The Harp guy is stupid. Whatever his desert island pick is, I can guarantee you I would rather have Exile.

Moral Orel - The Otis Files!

Mruniverse

Thank God that Otis came along, otherwise the big web chat thingie with Dino might have been a waste of time or something. I know very little about the man, other than he is the former Mr. Universe pictured above.

Also, he freed the slaves. And he's gonna get us all out of Iraq!

Kudos, Otis!

WOO HOO!!!!! MORAL OREL!!!!! YEEEE HA!!!!!

Show_moral

I am so sick of talking about Moral Orel...  Dino's great. Jay's great. Carolyn's great. Nick's great (I"m told).

This whole chat idea is a nightmare.

For those of you visiting my blog for the first time, please be careful when wandering around. And DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING! Everything is carefully put in its place in a very precise manner. I would appreciate it if everyone would just PLEASE ABSTAIN FROM CLICKING ON ANY LINKS or going "exploring" in the archives, or some such thing.

Obviously, the internet is not your public playground. This site is designed for people that are concerned with things that only I care about, so you need not concern yourselves with its contents, beyond this Dino business, which hopefully will be over soon.

That said, LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!!!!!

Come 8PM ET I will start a new Moral Orel post, and all you need to do is click on the comment section of that post to have a FANTASTIC  CHAT with Dino Stamatopoulos.  He PROMISES to be watching, and pressing the refresh button a lot. And I think I can  guarantee that ALL YOUR QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED!

More(al) Orel

Dino736398_2

I've been trying to think of what my favorite Dino anecdote might be. It's tough. I've known the guy a long time, and as far as anecdotes go, he's pretty much a machine.

I guess if there's one story I can tell you that I think defines Dino (and it is by no means the funniest one) it would be us driving to work in LA. We were PA's on some shitty film, and we had to drive a lot, cuz we filming all over the place. We had a 1962 Comet that Dino bought for a very low figure from Mike Stoyanov (of TV's Blossom). Anyway, we didn't have a lot of money, so we rarely put gas in the Comet, and Dino's favorite thing was driving on the highway, in the middle of nowhere, with the gas guage on EMPTY, loudly proclaiming "I've NEVER run out of gas!!!! I can't imagine EVER running out of gas! I wonder what it would FEEL like to RUN OUT OF GAS?!?!?!" And then he would go on to curse Jesus and God and whoever else, in the most profane language he could imagine, just daring the powers that be to empty his gas tank.
The further out into the boondocks we were, the funnier the bit was.

Of course we never ran out of gas.

That is not why I'm an athiest today, but it sure didn't hurt.

Anyway, TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!  8PM ET SUPER CRAZY HAPPY FUN TIME SEXY CHAT WITH Dino Stamatopoulos, creator of MORAL OREL!!!!!!

I'm going to start a new Moral Orel post, and then we'll just rev up the ol' chat machine in the comments.

You CANNOT STOP Moral Orel Week!!!!!!

Weiden_gold_mgow_150

Who is

Nick Weidenfeld???

It is a mystery.

I have never met the man, but I'm told he is an integral part of the Moral Orel operation.  You can IMDB him, if you want.  Probably you would learn a little bit about him that way. I started to do that, but then I ate some leftover tacos and got really tired.

Since I have exhausted every avenue I am aware of to learn more about this enigma of a man, I am simply going to state some facts about him as if I know they are true.

Nick Weidenfeld invented the Taliban, but he quickly condemned them, telling anyone who would listen that it was just a bad idea he happened to come up with. He may never live this down.

Nick Weidenfeld is Dino's nephew, but it is also possible that he is his son. Look at the picture!

Nick Weidenfeld has one super power, the ability to see inside that tiny front pocket in your jeans. Careful what you put in that pocket! Especially if you plan on seeing Nick, and wearing the same jeans you put the thing in the tiny front pocket that you don't want him to see!
CUZ NICK'LL SEE IT FOR SURE!!!!

Nick Weidenfeld has not yet found a practical use for his super power, although he does have a costume that he hasn't shown anyone. (Yes, there is a codpiece.)

Nick Weidenfeld has three testicles, but one does not belong to him.

Nick Weidenfeld is on the phone. And he's calling FROM INSIDE THE BUILDING!!!!

All right. That's all I know for sure about Nick Weidenfeld. Oh, there's one more thing. Dino says that he is the salt of the earth, and that Moral Orel is much better because of his contributions. So here's to you, Nick Weidenfeld! You. Rock.

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, Part I of the Moral Orel hunting episode is right here.

Part II will be posted somewhere on the internet on Friday. I'm assuming it will be at the Adult Swim website, but I have no idea, and no way that I can see to get that info. Anyway, that's why we're doing the chat on Thursday. Cuz that's BEFORE Friday. And everyone can talk about how jazzed they are for Part II

REMEMBER!!!!!!!!!
TOMORROW, THURSDAY JULY 12th at 8PM is the HUUUUUUUUUUUGE chat we're going to have with Dino, taking on ALL COMERS!!!!! Maybe Carolyn will show up!!!!! And maybe Nick will-AAAGH!!!! NICK'S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!!!!!

Moral Orel Week Continues!!!

Orels2

It's no secret that the voices of all our favorite animated prepubescent boys are, in fact, adult women. Which is why I feel comfortable dedicating this post to the voice of Moral Orel, Carolyn Lawrence!

I first met Carolyn back when she was tied romantically to my friend Mike Stoyanov, of TV's Blossom.

By the way, Mayim Bialik... very cool person. I'm pretty sure she's now a brain surgeon. (Take that Gary Coleman!)

Anyhoo, Carolyn is awesome as well. At least she was always very nice to me. It's quite possible that she hates gypsies, or some such thing. I don't know. Frankly, I don't want to know.

But you have to love her work on Moral Orel. (and for that matter her portrayal of Sandy Squirrel on Sponge Bob) She does an amazing job.

And now, thanks to Google, I'm able to offer you a little perspective. For example...

Here's Rocky Squirrel...

A Little Candy

Adam_west

I feel like I need to add a post to sort of lighten the mood. Forgive me if I dip into the WFMU well again, but here is a link to a great site called Saturday Morning Blog. You can easily waste a whole day looking at this guy's business.

Anyway, the post I'm linking to is a superhero show starring Adam West and Burt Ward, made in the late 70's, so it's well after they did the Batman series. It's a little like a game show, but not really. The first clip features a little-known superhero, introduced by Ed McMahon, called Ghetto Man. Let your imagination run wild before you click on the link. I don't think you will be that far off.

At any rate, say good-bye to at least a few hours of your life...
